She had very green fingers back then, having rented an allotment in Dean Street for a number of years. So I was more used to seeing her return to our home in Crosby Street wearing sturdy shoes covered in soil, a simple dress and cardigan and carrying bags of vegetables. But she wasn't averse to looking smart, far from it. Indeed, she worked at the Kardomah Cafe for a time - frilly white apron and all. louis vuitton bags Mum was, I believe, a typical housewife of the 1960s, cooking good, basic, and wholesome family meals - using much of her home- grown produce in the process - week in, week out. The only really grand meal she cooked was at Christmas time. Going back further in time to the frugal early and mid-1950s, things were a whole lot worse. I still recoil in horror at some of the meals mum would dish up - sheeps' brains, cows' hearts, and tripe! Dad actually loved the tripe though. I think Fanny wasn't averse to encouraging her fans to cook meals with a certain amount of financial thrift concerning the ingredients. And as mum was clearly a fan, perhaps Fanny was ultimately to blame for my childhood suffering! A family friend I contacted recalls mum going to the culinary demonstration. But I don't. Hence my complete surprise at seeing the wonderful picture. If mum did subsequently pick up any new recipes or hints from Fanny Cradock, they were lost on me because, by then, I was in and out of the house at all hours of the day grabbing a sandwich, or making beans on toast for me. Strangely, I am now very much a foody, watch all the TV chefs, have a library of recipe books, and enjoy cooking on a daily basis. I have also now become interested in gardening.
